Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano is the best herb in my herbal arsenal. It works very well. I use it for my livestock by planting it in our pasture so that the animals can self-medicate and oregano essential oil in their water when fall rain and winter snow falls as an alternative to medicating them with antibiotics and the like. I use it when I feel a cold coming on. I give it to my dogs when they have an infection. Oregano is loaded with goodies such as: fiber, iron, manganese, vitamin E, iron, calcium, omega fatty acids, manganese, and tryptophan. Oregano also has eight-times more antioxidants than apples and three times as much as blueberries; this boost everyone’s immune system.

In addition to the goodies, oregano has healing properties. It is an:

• Anti-Bacterial
• Anti-Viral
• Anti-Fungal
• Anti-Parasitic
• Anti-Inflammatory
• Anti-Spasmodic
• Antioxidant

and is a natural anesthetic. Oregano also supports/enables anti-cancer activity by promoting cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

Feel free to use it yourself if you have an upper-respiratory infection or a head cold by sprinkling a few dashes of oil in a bowl of steaming water, put a towel over your head and inhale (my favorite way)! Or take it in capsule form for anti-bacterial and anti-viral benefits. Sprinkle the essential oil on your tootsies to prevent and treat athlete’s foot and massage in a few drops of essential oil with the carrier oil of your choice into your joints for arthritis relief. Yes, you will be herbaceous, but who doesn’t love that? It’s hot right!?! 😉 You may also place a drop or two into your tea, but I am warning you now, it is VERY potent.

For livestock and pets, oregano essential oil is brilliant. Current legislation is pushing antibiotics out of livestock feed and treatments. Not the approach to take in my humble opinion to combat this problem, but it is leaving those farmers who raise livestock for meat and eggs in the lurch. The answer that the industry is coming up with is oregano essential oil. It is so effective in that, I use it as a tool to prevent avian flu outbreaks within my flock and am recommending it for other producers to do the same.

I always recommend consulting a homeopathic doctor before starting any treatment, but one of the benefits to using oregano essential oil is that there doesn’t seem to be any side effects, aside from resetting your immune system in your gut. Use it for a set period of time, no longer than 10 days in high doses.  That being said, check it out with your doctor first.

  4. Thank you for the tip. After reading your post few days ago my Oregano Essential oil finally arrived and I managed to implant a drop in my dogs food. He is old dog, so I hope to support his immune and digestive system with oils every so. He was not to thrilled about eating sausage with it, but eventually hunger for a snack got stronger. Do you have maybe some ideas on covering the strong smell with some other products?

  5. I didn’t know about using it for livestock! It is great for head colds though. I used a combination of it, peppermint, and lavender oils (the kind approved for topical use) slightly diluted as a decongestant/relaxing chest rub for my daughter when she had one.

I love oregano oil for its amazing breadth of application! Do you make a distinction between what is known as wild oregano and what is sold commercially? I understand that wild oregano is much more powerful than “plain” oregano that you can buy at the nursery or dried in the spice section.

    1. Yes, it is stronger. I should also mention that oregano oil shouldn’t be taken during pregnancy due to oregano oil causing blood flow and possibly triggering menstruation-thus it could cause a miscarriage. What is difficult with herbal medicine is that the production methods, variety, and processing can all affect the dose and effectiveness of the herbal treatment. Pharmaceuticals have extracted (in many cases from herbs and plants) a particular element of the herb and then synthetically created that element — creating a standard consistent doses. The problem with that is it creates a super element which takes over the body, inhibits the body’s ability to identify and use the element and causes numerous side effects as the body reacts to this super-element. The other elements in the herb can counteract the side effects of a particular element, helping the body to identify and better use what the herb provides. But it is at a cost, inconsistency and dosing problems. You are so smart! Such an important point! 😉
